Description

CANbus (Controller Area Network bus) is a communication protocol and data transfer standard used in the automotive industry for in-vehicle networks. It was originally developed to provide a robust, reliable and cost-effective way to allow electronic devices, such as engine control units, ABS brakes, airbags and other systems within a vehicle to communicate with each other.

The SparkFun CAN-BUS shield is designed to give your Arduino project access to this network. The shield allows you to poll the ECU for information including coolant temperature, throttle position, vehicle speed, error codes, engine rpms, and a whole lot more!

The board uses the Microchip MCP2515 CAN controller with the MCP2551 CAN transceiver along with several other accessories including a microSD card holder, joystick, serial LCD connector and connector for an EM506 GPS module.

CAN connectivity is provided by way of the standard DB-9 connector. This can be used in conjunction with our OBD-II Cable to connect to connect directly to the diagnostics port on most vehicles.

Note: A cable is not included with this shield.
