Automotive relays are those black cube style relays found in a variety of equipment. They are commonly used for ignition, fuel pumps, and other higher-draw devices in a 12V system, but work great for anything needing a simple On/Off high current DC power source. This relay kit includes a Single Pole, Dual Throw (SPDT) Relay, Mounting Tab, and Relay base and is perfect for adding a large external relay to just about anything!
The relay is designed for use in 12V automotive applications and features a 12V / 80ohm non-latching coil. The SPDT contact arrangement has a single common pin that is switched between a Normally Open and Normally Closed contact. Like most relays, a transistor and snubber diode will be required if you wish to control this with a microcontroller. All connections to the relay are by way of 0.250″ spade terminals, which mate to the female spade terminals in the included base. An optional metal mounting tab is included to secure the assembly in place.
The relay base features a key-and-slot design, enabling multiple bases to connect to one another. This allows them to form a larger, unified block, providing a compact and easy-to-mount solution for installing multiple relays. Wiring from the base consists of 5 color coded wires. 18AWG Yellow and Red wires connect to the relay coil, while heavier 16AWG Black, White, and Blue connect to the Common, Normally Open, and Normally Closed contacts. The wires are pre-stripped and ready for butt-connectors or other means of contact.
