Description

All Character LCDs are common and easy to use, but when connecting them to your microcontroller they can use up most of your digital pins! The i2c / SPI character LCD backpack is designed to reduce the number of pins required by your microcontroller to drive a Character LCD screen. Simply solder this backpack to the Character LCD of your choice and connect it via i2c or SPI.

This backpack will work with any ‘standard’ character LCD, from 8×1 to 20×4 sizes, as long as they have a 16-pin single-line connection header at the top. As usual, Adafruit provides easy to use libraries for the Arduino and Circuit Python along with in-depth tutorials!

In the most recent revision, many improvements were added to the board including a 3-5V boost circuit, allowing the backpack to control 5V LCDs with 3V power and logic. An improved potentiometer has been added, making contrast adjustment a lot easier. Finally, it has been made Qwiic / STEMMA QT compatible – no need to solder the I2C and power lines anymore!

Also, as of April 2024, this board now features pre-soldered screw terminals.
