A reed switch is a form of non-contact switch that is actuated with a magnet. As the magnet is moved away the switch will change state. This is how most door switches work in alarm systems. Simply connect one of these sensors to the digital input on your microcontroller or single board computer and you have the basis of a basic DIY alarm!
